A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
