Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged the Gap Among Rock Generations

Marking two decades since Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the tools to become a rock star. Not literally, but try convincing anyone who's mastered Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the screen in time with the music. Each riff mimicked particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine live show.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable series that had a significant impact on numerous of the artists included, introducing decades-old bands to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded every song because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain the project would flop. But once the game became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the music they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band one featured act included Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon remembers how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “The game offered a bigger, younger audience. Generally this had been considered outdated material, but then when it was included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It gave our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased stateside, meaning the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew had on Never Too Late during travel, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated game editions that focused on their music collections and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the band greater revenue compared to their records. It sold well over half a million units upon release, and demand for their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. The song is difficult enough on the hardest setting, not to mention played at double speed and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed it took nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should use a real gun and go to war,” notes musician the artist.

DragonForce previously wrapped up a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before top acts at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best marketing, be it for automobiles, apparel or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

Most installments were released over a mere five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the scene active, with expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games where you can update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant new music it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. There’s no reason for it to persist for future fans.”
