Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired two times late to take a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
