Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
